Service has gone a perfect 10-0 against West Anchorage recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Tuesday. The Cougars will be playing in front of their home fans against the Eagles at 5:15 p.m. The two teams each escaped (but just barely!) with wins against their previous opponents.
Service is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Alaska's top teams: Chugiak, who was ranked 12th at the time (Service was ranked first). The Cougars had just enough and edged out the Mustangs 5-3. The victory continues a trend for the Cougars in their matchups with the Mustangs: they've now won five in a row.
Rilen Niclai spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered three runs (all of which were unearned) on four hits and racked up 15 Ks. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in six consecutive appearances.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Kegan Lennox, who went 1-for-2 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.
Service hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Chugiak struck out 15 times.
Meanwhile, it may have taken nine innings to finish the job, but West Anchorage ultimately got the result they hoped for on Saturday. They skirted past Bettye Davis East Anchorage 6-4.
Jack Boots made a big impact no matter where he played. On the mound, he kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out seven over 7.2 innings pitched. Boots was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run. Those two RBI gave him a new career-high.
In other batting news, Paul Dittrich was excellent, going 2-for-5 with one stolen base, one run, and one double.
Service's win was their tenth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 16-1. Those home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.7 runs on average over those games. As for West Anchorage, their win ended a three-game drought on the road and puts them at 4-11.
West Anchorage's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Service has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .452. It's a different story for West Anchorage, though, as they've only averaged .347. Will they be able to contain Service's hitters?
Service took their victory against West Anchorage in their previous matchup back in April by a conclusive 11-5 score. Will the Cougars repeat their success, or do the Eagles have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
