After flying high against the Churchland Truckers last Saturday, the Lakeland Cavaliers came back down to earth. Lakeland took a serious blow against Hopewell on Wednesday, falling 63-29. While losing is never fun, Lakeland can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Virginia basketball rankings (they are ranked 271st, while Hopewell is ranked 36th).
It was another big night for Erin Edmonds, who dropped a double-double on 25 points and 11 steals for Hopewell. The match was Edmonds' eighth in a row with at least ten points. April Winfield was another key contributor, scoring 22 points along with four steals.
Lakeland bumped their record down to 5-7 with that defeat, which was their third straight on the road. Those losses could be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they only averaged 21.7 points per game. As for Hopewell, the win for they keeps them at an undefeated 9-0.
Lakeland will head out on the road to face off against Deep Creek at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. As for Hopewell, they will stay at home for another game and welcome Hermitage at 7:15 p.m. on January 5th. Hermitage is coming into the matchup on a three-game losing streak.
