The Westchester Comets captured the CIF Division I state championship and also captured the two top awards in the MaxPreps Boys' Basketball All-State selections.
Dwayne Polee has been selected as the California State Player of the Year, while Ed Azzam has been named the Coach of the Year.
Other individual awards include MVPs of each of the five divisions. Polee is the Division I MVP while Norman Powell of Lincoln is the Division II MVP, Josiah Turner of Sacramento is the Division III MVP, Allen Crabbe of Price is the Division IV MVP and Troy Leaf of Foothills Christian is the Division V MVP.
PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Dwayne Polee (Westchester of Los Angeles)
More than a human highlight-reel, Polee improved all phases of his game to lead the Comets to their second straight CIF State Division I title. The lean 6-foot-7, 180-pound pogo stick averaged 21 points, eight rebounds and two blocks per game. Though his dunks of all variety — follow, alley-oop and off-the-dribble are what people remember — Azzam told the Los Angeles Times: “He’s made tremendous strides in understanding the defense, where to be, blocking out, taking charges, doing a lot of the little things that he never, ever was concerned about doing (before).” Polee, once a USC recruit, is still in the free market, deciding where to sign. Reportedly, New Mexico, Georgia and UNLV are on his short list.

COACH OF THE YEAR: Ed Azzam (Westchester)
The MaxPreps.com National Coach of the Year was an easy choice for California Coach of the Year after guiding the Comets to their second straight CIF State Division I title and sixth in his career. Westchester (32-3) faced nine teams that appeared in MaxPreps.com’s Xcellent 25 at some point in the season. Despite a pair of setbacks at the City of Palms Classic in December and a letdown against Rice in late January, Westchester pulled together at the right time. The Comets won 16 in a row to close the season and capture their second straight Division I state title. They finished No. 3 in the MaxPreps Freeman computer rankings and No. 8 in the Xcellent 25 human rankings. Granted, Azzam (677-206 career mark) was blessed with upwards of six Division I players, including Polee, but he got the Comets to share the ball, play as a team, not get over-confident and most importantly, play rigorous defense.
