The Morgan Trojans will challenge the Emery Spartans at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Morgan is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.9 runs per game this season.
Morgan is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Tuesday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with an 11-10 win over North Sanpete.
The team relied heavily on Kanyon Leonelli, who went 3-for-5 with three runs, one triple, and two RBI. That's the most hits he has posted since back in March. Lincoln Gilson was another key player, going a perfect 4-for-4 with two RBI, one run, and one double.
They weren't the only ones making solid contact: Morgan kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 15 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least nine hits in three consecutive games.
Meanwhile, after a string of four wins, Emery's good fortune finally ran out on Tuesday. They came up short against Canyon View, falling 13-1. Having soared to a lofty ten runs in the game before, the Spartans couldn't push the score so high this time.
Beau Stilson made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went 2-for-3 with one triple and one run.
Morgan has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 20-9 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.8 runs over those games. As for Emery, their loss dropped their record down to 11-18.
Emery's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Morgan has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .432. It's a different story for Emery, though, as they've only averaged .363. Will they be able to contain Morgan's hitters?
Morgan suffered a grim 10-3 defeat to Emery when the teams last played on Monday. Can the Trojans avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
