The Trinity Catholic Celtics will square off against the Taylor Wildcats at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Trinity Catholic is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.6 runs per game this season.
Trinity Catholic is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Tuesday. Their pitcher stepped up to hand Crescent City a 16-0 shutout. The high-flying hitting performance was a huge turnaround for the Celtics considering their one-run performance the contest before.
Liliana Ornelas made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she struck out nine batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits (and not a single walk). She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than two walks in 14 consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-2 with one home run.
In other batting news, Trinity Catholic got a massive performance out of Lourdes Ornelas, who went 1-for-3 with one home run, two stolen bases, and two runs. That's the most runs Ornelas has posted since back in March. Julianna Ortega was another key player, going 1-for-2 with two stolen bases, three runs, and two RBI.
Trinity Catholic always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .593. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Crescent City only posted an OBP of .182.
Meanwhile, Taylor came tearing into Tuesday's match with three straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 6 runs), and they left with even more momentum. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 7-5 victory over the Bulldogs. Seven seems to be a good number for the Wildcats as the squad scooped up a win with the same number of runs in their previous game.
Lacey Price and Amya Ramos did most of the damage at the plate: Price went 3-for-4 with two runs, two doubles, and two RBI, while Ramos got on base in all four of her plate appearances with three runs and one double. Another player making a difference was Caydence Hassell, who got on base in three of her four plate appearances with one stolen base and one run.
Trinity Catholic is on a roll lately: they've won ten of their last 12 games. That's provided a nice bump to their 18-8 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.5 runs on average over those games. As for Taylor, their win bumped their record up to 15-9.
Fans could be in store for some top-tier slugging on Wednesday. Trinity Catholic hasn't had any problems when it comes to power this season, having averaged 0.6 home runs per game. However, it's not like Taylor struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 0.9 home runs. With so much power on both teams, it'll be down to the pitchers to keep the mound locked down.
Trinity Catholic came out on top in a nail-biter against Taylor in their previous meeting on April 3rd, sneaking past 8-6. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Celtics since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
