The Merino Rams and the Simla Cubs squared off in some playoff action on Saturday, but sadly the Merino Rams had to settle for second. Merino suffered a rough 37-14 defeat at the hands of Simla. Merino's loss signaled the end of their four-game winning streak.
Despite the loss, Merino still got an impressive performance from Coen Schmidt, who rushed for 117 yards and a touchdown, and also threw for 223 yards and a touchdown while picking up 10.6 yards per attempt. Schmidt has been hot recently, having posted 100 or more rushing yards the last eight times he's played. Another player making a difference was Jace Curtis, who picked up 109 receiving yards and a touchdown.
Caston Cox was his usual excellent self, throwing for 183 yards and four touchdowns while completing 85.7% of his passes. Brent Bowker also helped out with an impressive 122 receiving yards.
Merino's defeat dropped their record down to 6-5. As for Simla, their win was their 13th straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 11-0.
Merino does not have any more games scheduled as of now. Simla will look to defend their home field on Saturday against Haxtun at 1:00 p.m. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in Colorado (Haxtun is ranked fourth, while Simla is ranked third).
