Winning is just a little bit easier when you work as a team to rack up eight more assists than your opponent, a fact the Chaparral Wolverines proved on Friday. They came out on top against Mountain Vista by a score of 62-50. Given Chaparral's advantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 25th, while Mountain Vista is ranked 89th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Chaparral's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Reagan Lentell led the charge by scoring 19 points along with seven rebounds and four steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Lentell has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Lauren Thompson, who dropped a double-double on 13 points and 12 rebounds.
Mountain Vista's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Grace Roscoe, who dropped a double-double on 16 points and 15 rebounds. Kennedy Spellman was another key contributor, scoring 18 points along with five rebounds.
Chaparral has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four matches, which provided a nice bump to their 10-4 record this season. As for Mountain Vista, they are on a four-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 5-7.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Chaparral will challenge Douglas County at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. That game will pit two of the most dominant against one another: Sofia Baldessari and Thompson. Mountain Vista will be staying on the road on Tuesday to face off against Regis Jesuit at 5:30 p.m. on January 23rd. One thing working in Regis Jesuit's favor is that they have posted big point totals in their last four games.
