Winthrop is 0-10 against Saugus since May of 2021 but things could change on Monday. The Vikings will host the Sachems at 4:30 p.m. The two teams are strolling into their matchups after big wins in their previous games.
Winthrop took a loss when they played away from home on Tuesday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Friday. They put the hurt on Rockport with a sharp 18-3 win.
Sofia Gonzalez was incredible, going a perfect 3-for-3 with four runs, two doubles, and one stolen base. Those two doubles gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Norah Zaffini, who went 2-for-3 with one home run, three RBI, and one stolen base.
They weren't the only ones making solid contact: Winthrop kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits in four consecutive games dating back to last season.
The home team had won the previous five meetings between Saugus and Swampscott, and Saugus kept the tradition alive. The Sachems never let the Big Blue get on the board and left with a 12-0 victory on Wednesday. Considering the Sachems' hitters had been struggling lately, the high-scoring outing was a much-needed turnaround.
Sofia McCarrier was a major factor no matter where she played. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out six over six innings pitched. McCarrier was also big at the plate, getting on base in two of her three plate appearances with three stolen bases, one run, and one RBI.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Aubrey Demonte, who went 2-for-3 with three runs, two RBI, and one double. Alannah Duong was another key player, getting on base in two of her four plate appearances with one stolen base and one run.
Winthrop's first win this season bumped their record up to 1-1-1. As for Saugus, their victory (their first of the season) made their record 1-2.
Saugus' pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Winthrop has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .449. It's a different story for Saugus, though, as they've only averaged .329. Will they be able to contain Winthrop's hitters?
Winthrop couldn't quite get it done against Saugus in their previous matchup back in May of 2025 as they fell 7-3. Can the Vikings avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
