Sahuaro has enjoyed a two-game homestand but will soon have to dust off their road jerseys. The Sahuaro Cougars and the Salpointe Catholic Lancers will face off at 7:00 p.m. on January 16th without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Sahuaro posted their biggest win since December 16, 2023 on Thursday. They really took it to Canyon del Oro for the full four quarters, racking up a 54-19 victory at home. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest win Sahuaro has posted against Canyon del Oro since March 3, 2021.
Cassandra Coolidge was her usual excellent self, scoring 21 points along with five steals. That makes it six consecutive games in which she has scored at least a third of Sahuaro's points. Another player making a difference was Biale Sika, who scored 12 points along with three steals.
Meanwhile, Salpointe Catholic scored the most points they've had all season to find success on Thursday. They blew past Pueblo 83-61. The victory was familiar territory for Salpointe Catholic who now have three in a row.
Salpointe Catholic got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Taliyah Henderson out in front who dropped a double-double on 18 points and 18 rebounds. That's the first time this season that Henderson scored 15 or more points. Jordan Watts was another key contributor, scoring 21 points along with six rebounds.
Sahuaro's win was their tenth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 16-6. They've been dominating during the matchups in that stretch too, as they've won by an average of 36.2 points. As for Salpointe Catholic, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won seven of their last eight contests, which provided a nice bump to their 13-3 record this season.
Keep an eye on the arc in Tuesday's contest: Sahuaro have made nailing deep shots look easy this year this season, having only averaged 4 threes per game. It's a different story for Salpointe Catholic, though, as they've been averaging only 4.5 threes per game. Given Sahuaro's sizeable advantage in that area, Salpointe Catholic will need to find a way to close that gap.
Sahuaro suffered a grim 62-37 defeat to Salpointe Catholic in their previous meeting back in February of 2023. Thankfully for Sahuaro, Bria Medina (who scored 12 points along with eight assists and five rebounds) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result?
