Basketball Recap: Kameyah Brown's Big Game Can't Quite Lead East Mecklenburg over Rocky River

It was a Battle of the Birds when East Mecklenburg faced off against Rocky River on Friday. The East Mecklenburg Eagles took a 58-47 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Rocky River Ravens. While losing is never fun, the Eagles can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 396th, while the Ravens are ranked 158th).

East Mecklenburg lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Kameyah Brown, who almost dropped a double-double on nine points and 13 rebounds. The dominant performance gave Brown a new career-high in boards. Jurnee Darling was another key player, putting up ten points and five steals.

Even though they lost, East Mecklenburg smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 18 offensive rebounds. That's the most offensive boards they've managed all season.

Rocky River found their leader in freshman Jade Bell, who went 11 for 17 on her way to 30 points along with eight steals and six rebounds. Bell is trending in the right direction considering she's improved her point production for three straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of MaKenzie Michael, who dropped a double-double on 11 points and 13 boards.

East Mecklenburg has traveled a rocky road recently having lost five of their last six matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 4-14 record this season. As for Rocky River, the victory was the third in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 11-5.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. East Mecklenburg will welcome Garinger at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. East Mecklenburg is facing Garinger at the right time seeing as Garinger is stuck on a five-game losing streak. As for Rocky River, they will be playing in front of their home fans against A.L. Brown at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
