The Nonnewaug Chiefs will take on the St. Joseph Cadets at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Nonnewaug will be looking to extend their current seven-game winning streak.
Nonnewaug is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Monday. They came out on top against Weston by a score of 5-1.
Brady Herman tossed a big game, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only one hit over 4.1 innings pitched.
On the hitting side, Owen Hustek was excellent, going 1-for-3 with four RBI and one double. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in April of 2025. Another player making a difference was Scott Viveros, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with one triple.
Meanwhile, St. Joseph earned a 4-1 win over Killingly on Monday. The victory continues a trend for the Cadets in their matchups with the Trailblazers: they've now won four in a row.
HT Jones was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he struck out 11 batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one stolen base and one RBI.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Derek Larkins, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with one stolen base, one run, and one double. That stolen base marked the first that he has snagged this season. Gavin Rovinelli was another key player, going 1-for-3 with two RBI, one run, and one double.
Nonnewaug's win bumped their record up to 19-4. As for St. Joseph, their victory bumped their record up to 16-7.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Tuesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Nonnewaug has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 8.9 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like St. Joseph struggles in that department as they've been averaging 6.8 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Nonnewaug skirted past St. Joseph 7-5 in their previous meeting back in June of 2023. Do the Chiefs have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Cadets turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
