The Southeast Pirates will head out to challenge the Champion Golden Flashes at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. Southeast is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.5 runs per game this season.
Southeast gave up the first runs on Wednesday, but they didn't let that get them down. They narrowly escaped with a win as the squad sidled past Jackson-Milton 11-9. Southeast's victory was all the more impressive since the Bluejays were averaging only four runs allowed on the season.
Southeast let Ava Stephens and Miranda Timko run wild. Stephens scored a run and stole four bases while going 2-for-4, while Timko went 2-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI. Stephens has been hot recently, having posted three or more stolen bases the last three times she's played. Bailey Morris was another key player, scoring two runs while going 1-for-2.
Meanwhile, Champion put another one in the bag on Wednesday to keep their perfect season alive. They never let Garfield get on the board and left with a 3-0 win. Those three runs were actually the fewest the Golden Flashes have put up all season, but given the result they're probably not too concerned.
The result came thanks to Gabrielle Gradishar's shutout, as she gave up just two hits and racked up 20 Ks.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Sam Strock, who scored a run while going 1-for-2.
Champion hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. The team has now struck out at least five batters in five consecutive contests.
Southeast is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 4-2 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.0 runs over those games. As for Champion, they pushed their record up to 8-0 with the win, which was their fifth straight at home dating back to last season.
Southeast's speedy runners might be the difference in Thursday's game. The Pirates have been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.5 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for Champion, though, as they've been averaging only 0.5 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Southeast continue to outrun the ball?
Southeast came up short against Champion when the teams last played back in March, falling 4-1. Can the Pirates avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
