Elkhorn hasn't had much luck against Union Grove recently, but that could start to change on Monday. The Elks will head out on the road to square off against the Broncos at 4:30 p.m. Elkhorn is coming into the contest hot, having won their last six games.
Elkhorn will bounce into Monday's matchup after beating Burlington, who they had gone 2-7 against in their nine prior meetings. The Elks never let the Demons get on the board and left with a 16-0 victory on Friday. The result was nothing new for the Elks, who have now won seven games by seven runs or more so far this season.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Union Grove). Everything went their way against Beloit Memorial on Friday as they made off with a 14-2 win. The team's explosion at the plate also rewarded the Broncos with their most commanding win of the season.
Evan Northup looked comfortable as he tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. He has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Matthew Gruber was incredible, going 3-for-4 with three RBI, one stolen base, and one run. Those three hits gave him a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Tucker Katterhagen, who went 2-for-3 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.
Union Grove always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .568. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Elkhorn's victory was their fourth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 11-6. The road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.5 runs on average over those games. As for Union Grove, the victory got them back to even at 10-10.
Elkhorn suffered a grim 9-2 defeat to Union Grove in their previous meeting back in May of 2024. Can the Elks avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
