Shaker and Shenendehowa are an even 5-5 against one another since May of 2015, but likely not for long. The Bison will take on the Plainsmen at 4:15 p.m. on Monday. Shaker is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.2 runs per game this season.
Shaker fought the good fight in their extra-innings match against Saratoga Springs on Friday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Blue Streaks by a score of 4-3. The Bison haven't had much luck with the Blue Streaks recently, as the team has come up short the last eight times they've met.
Shaker got a good showing from Daniel Cioffi, who struck out six batters over four innings while giving up just one earned run off one hit.
At the plate, Brendan McLoughlin made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went 1-for-4 with one home run. That home run was his first of the season.
Meanwhile, Shenendehowa had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 8 runs) and they went ahead and made it three on Saturday. They skirted past the Tigers 5-3.
Noah Lam looked comfortable as he tossed three innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits. He has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than one walk any time he's pitched this season.
On the hitting side, Ethan McTighe was excellent, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and one double. Those two runs gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Aiden Thielke, who got on base in all four of his plate appearances with one stolen base and one run.
Shenendehowa's win bumped their record up to 8-4. As for Shaker, their loss dropped their record down to 9-2.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Monday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Shaker has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 11.9 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Shenendehowa struggles in that department as they've been averaging 7.2 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Shaker beat Shenendehowa 8-5 when the teams last played back in April. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Bison since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
