Last Thursday, Regis Jesuit faced Chaparral in a battle between two of the state's top teams. Regis Jesuit took their matchup on the road with ease, bagging a 81-35 victory over Chaparral. Regis Jesuit has made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won six games by 22 points or more this season.
Regis Jesuit's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Coryn Watts led the charge by scoring 17 points along with five assists and four steals. Hana Belibi was another key contributor, dropping a double-double on 19 points and 11 rebounds.
Meanwhile, Ponderosa struggled with offensive rebounds on Thursday (Douglas County had eight more) and sadly the final score reflected it. Ponderosa fell 67-54 to Douglas County. Ponderosa has struggled against Douglas County recently, as their matchup on Thursday was their third consecutive lost matchup.
Ponderosa's loss came about despite a quality game from Maddison Neale, who went 7 for 9 from beyond the arc en route to 28 points and 2 assists. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Neale has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Miale Ames, who scored seven points along with three steals.
Regis Jesuit's victory bumped their record up to 8-5. As for Ponderosa, their defeat dropped their record down to 4-9.
This contest is one where the number of possessions is likely to be a big factor: Regis Jesuit have been smashing the glass this season, having only averaged 34.8 rebounds per game. However, it's not like Ponderosa struggles in that department as they've been averaging only 26.9 rebounds per game. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
Everything came up roses for Regis Jesuit against Ponderosa in their previous matchup back in January of 2023 as the team secured a 80-15 victory. With Regis Jesuit ahead 54-8 at the half, the game was all but over already.
