The Leonard Lancers will square off against the Wellington Wolverines at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Leonard is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 11.8 runs per game this season.
Things were looking good for Leonard after they put the first points on the board on Thursday, but unfortunately for them things went downhill from there. They fell just short of Somerset Academy - Canyons by a score of 10-8. The Lancers haven't had much luck with the Cougars recently, as the team has come up short the last seven times they've met.
Shawn Lopez was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. On the mound, he pitched 5.1 innings while giving up three earned (and two unearned) runs off three hits. Lopez was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with three RBI, two runs, and one triple. Lopez is also crushing it when it comes to stolen bases: he's stolen at least one every time he's taken the field this season.
In other batting news, Samuel Nunez was cooking despite his team's loss, scoring two runs and stealing two bases while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances. Nunez is crushing it when it comes to stolen bases: he's stolen at least one every time he's taken the field this season. Lemay Cartina-Martinez was another key player, scoring a run and stealing two bases while getting on base in both of his plate appearances.
Meanwhile, Wellington waltzed into their game on Friday with two straight wins... but they left with three. They had just enough and edged out the Bobcats 5-3. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Wolverines have posted since April 2, 2024.
Wellington saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Lucas Bratten, who scored a run while going 3-for-4. The dominant performance also gave Bratten a new career-high in hits (three).
Wellington pushed their record up to 5-1 with the win, which was their fifth straight on the road dating back to last season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.0 runs over those games. As for Leonard, their loss dropped their record down to 2-2.
Leonard suffered a grim 12-2 defeat to Wellington in their previous meeting back in April of 2021. Will Leonard have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check back here after the action for a full breakdown and analysis of the contest.
