Southwestern recap October 1, 2013
Olmsted Falls moved up to 278 from 387 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in Southwestern. The Bulldogs climbed the ranks as a result of defeating Westlake 29-19.
Adding to the longest winning streak in the league this week, Avon Lake beat Berea-Midpark 23-8. This was the team's fourth consecutive win.
Steele's offense was unstoppable this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Anthony Eliopoulos threw for 45 yards and Joe D'Andrea had 90 yards receiving. On the ground Logan Mahar contributed 42 yards. Mahar helped Steele's passing attack out by catching 2 balls for 16 yards.
Derek Eibon was a passing and rushing force as the Comets lost to Elyria Catholic. He completed 5 passes for 73 yards and also ran for 12 yards. Eibon's key target this week was D'Andrea, who caught 8 passes for 90 yards.
Mahar was the most successful running back in the league this week. He ran for 42 yards on 8 carries as Steele fell to the Panthers. Teammate Donte Dower added to the ground attack by rushing for 39 yards.
Steele's offense cannot be tamed this season and the Comets feature the season leaders in passing, rushing and receiving yards. Eliopoulos has thrown for 479 yards and 4 touchdowns this season, while D'Andrea has 26 catches for 271 yards.
Two of the top units in Southwestern will face off this week when Chad DiFranco's team takes on Brecksville-Broadview Heights. The Comets' offense has scored 92 points this season, good for No. 1 in the league, while the Bees have allowed only 53 on the year.
As it stands, the Demons are in third, while Avon Lake is in second.
Olmsted Falls made the biggest jump in the national rankings this week, rising to 4,503 from 6,645. The improvement was largely due to a 29-19 victory over Westlake last week.
