The Northwestern Bulls came tearing into Friday's contest with five straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 30.2 points) and they left with even more momentum. They secured a 40-34 W over Norland. Winning is a bit easier when you work as a team to rack up 11 more assists than your opponent, as Northwestern did.
Northwestern's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Janyiah Mickens, who dropped a double-double on 12 points and 11 rebounds. Mickens is absolutely dominating the rebound category: she's posted at least eight every time she's taken the court this season. Another player making a difference was Sophonie Felix, who scored 11 points along with seven rebounds and three steals.
Norland lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Jasmine Johnson, who dropped a double-double on 11 points and 12 rebounds. Shania Swan was another key contributor, scoring 13 points along with five rebounds.
Northwestern pushed their record up to 11-5 with that win, which was their sixth straight on the road. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 52.8 points per game. As for Norland, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 6-13.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Northwestern will take on Mater Lakes Academy at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. That game will pit two of the most dominant against one another: Vanessa Vancott and Felix. As for Norland, they will head out on the road to take on Miami at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. Miami is coming into the match hot, having won their last five games.
