The Coconut Creek Cougars fought the good fight in their overtime contest against the Highlands Christian Knights on Friday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Knights by a score of 63-61. Having run the score up that high, both teams might be doing some extra defensive drills very soon.
Several Cougars players turned in solid performances, despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was McKevan Bell, who scored 17 points along with seven rebounds. Bell scored a full 27.9% of Coconut Creek's points, the fifth time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points. Another player making a difference was Jordan Weatherspoon, who scored 14 points along with six rebounds.
Highlands Christian had a senior duo take command as Samuel Service scored 21 points and Adrian Suero scored 20 points. That's the first time this season that Service scored 15 or more points. The team also got some help courtesy of Camaurie Dantes, who scored seven points.
Coconut Creek's defeat dropped their record down to 1-8. As for Highlands Christian, their win bumped their record up to 3-8.
Coconut Creek and Oxbridge Academy will face off at 6:00 p.m. on January 4th without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. Oxbridge Academy is coming into the contest on a four-game losing streak. Highlands Christian will have some time to savor their victory since their next game is a little ways off: they'll take on David Posnack Jewish Day at 7:00 p.m. on January 9th. David Posnack Jewish Day presents a significant challenge as they come into the match much higher ranked than Highlands Christian in Florida (David Posnack Jewish Day is ranked 150th, while Highlands Christian is ranked 575th).
