Basketball Recap: Jeffery Shreve's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Hebbronville over Bishop

Hebbronville lost against Bishop back in January and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Friday. The Hebbronville Longhorns lost 68-44 to the Bishop Badgers. While losing is never fun, the Longhorns can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 1574th, while the Badgers are ranked 721st).

Hebbronville's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Jeffery Shreve, who went 7 for 9 on his way to 14 points. That's the most points Shreve has posted since back in December of 2024. Another player making a difference was Robert Gonzalez, who posted six points and five rebounds.

Even though they lost, Hebbronville smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 13 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 13 offensive boards in four consecutive matches.

Bishop had a senior duo take command as James Garcia went 8 of 15 en route to 18 points in addition to eight steals and seven assists and Kristian Ramos went 11 for 19 on his way to 25 points along with eight boards and four steals. The game was Ramos' 17th in a row with at least ten points. Miguel Valdez was another key player, putting up seven points.

Hebbronville dropped their record down to 9-19 with the defeat, which was their fifth straight at home. As for Bishop, they are on a roll lately: they've won ten of their last 11 contests, which provided a nice bump to their 18-12 record this season.

Hebbronville has already played their next matchup (against Falfurrias), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing. Bishop will be playing at home against Banquete at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Banquete has a tough task ahead: they'll enter the game with three straight losses, while Bishop will come in with nine straight victories.
