Southmont hasn't had much luck against Western Boone recently, but that could start to change on Monday. The Mounties will be playing in front of their home fans against the Stars at 5:30 p.m. Southmont is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.8 runs per game this season.
On Thursday, Southmont made easy work of Lebanon and carried off a 12-6 win. That's two games straight that the Mounties have won by exactly six runs.
Ella Barry spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered five earned (and one unearned) runs on 15 hits and racked up seven Ks.

On the hitting side, Southmont let Catie Himes and Mallory Mason run wild. Himes went 2-for-4 with one home run and four RBI, while Mason went 3-for-4 with one home run, two runs, and one double. That's the most hits Mason has posted since back in April. Anna Stokes was another key player, going 2-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one double.
They weren't the only ones making solid contact: Southmont kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 15 hits. They are a perfect 10-0 when they post 11 or more hits.
Meanwhile, Western Boone hadn't done well against Lawrence North recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Saturday. The Stars walked away with a 9-4 victory over the Wildcats. The game was the first time the Stars have beaten the Wildcats on their field since May 15, 2021.
Mickey Burns spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered four earned runs on eight hits and racked up six Ks. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in three consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Raina Lutz and Addi Lee did most of the damage at the plate: Lutz got on base in three of her four plate appearances with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI, while Lee got on base in three of her four plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI. Another player making a difference was Ally Lewis, who went 1-for-3 with two runs and two RBI.
Western Boone's win bumped their record up to 16-5. As for Southmont, they are on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 14-7 record this season.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Monday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Southmont has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Western Boone struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 7 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Southmont might still be hurting after the 18-1 loss they got from Western Boone in their previous matchup back in May of 2024. Can the Mounties avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
