La Veta is 10-0 against Primero since February of 2016 and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Thursday. The La Veta Redhawks will head out on the road to challenge the Primero Bulldogs at 4:30 p.m. That match will pit two of the most dominant guards against one another: Aspen Autry and Isabela Maldonado.
La Veta is headed into the contest out to prove that what happened against Kim/Branson on Saturday (when they were outscored in every quarter) was just a minor bump in the road. La Veta came up short against Kim/Branson, falling 63-40. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest defeat the Redhawks have suffered against the Mustangs since February 20, 2021.

La Veta might have lost, but man, Autry was a machine: she went 11 for 20 en route to 24 points and five steals. The game was Autry's seventh in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Marianna De La Cruz, who went 5 of 10 on her way to 12 points.
Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Primero, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Saturday. They blew past Walsenburg 54-30 on Monday.
Primero's win came from a few key players La Veta will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Riley Monarco, who went 5 for 12 en route to 14 points and seven rebounds. The dominant performance gave her a new career-high in points. Alyvia Robinson was another key player, putting up ten points along with six boards and three steals.
La Veta's loss dropped their record down to 7-4. As for Primero, their win ended a three-game drought at home and bumped them up to 6-7.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: La Veta has been crashing the rebounds this season, having averaged 30 boards per game. However, it's not like Primero struggles in that department as they've been averaging 28.2 rebounds. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.
La Veta didn't have too much breathing room in their match against Primero in their previous matchup back in February of 2024, but they still walked away with a 51-45 victory. One of the biggest obstacles the team faced in that game was Maldonado, who almost dropped a double-double on 16 points and nine boards. Now that she's got a second chance to win this matchup, will La Veta still be able to contain Maldonado? There's only one way to find out.
