After flying high against the Cardinal Spellman The Pilots last Friday, the Kennedy Catholic Gaels came back down to earth. Kennedy Catholic took a hard 26-12 fall against Mt. St. Michael Academy on Saturday. Having soared to a lofty 33 points in the game before, Kennedy Catholic couldn't push the score so high this time.
When it comes to explaining why Kennedy Catholic lost, one person who can't be blamed is Israel Centeno-Johnson. Despite the final result, he picked up 86 receiving yards and a touchdown, and also punched in a touchdown on the ground.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Mt. St. Michael Academy to victory, but perhaps none more so than Nelson Perez, who picked up 133 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Perez was no stranger to the big play, cutting upfield for a catch that went for 61 yards. Carl Shaw was in the mix as well, providing Mt. St. Michael Academy with two touchdowns.
Kennedy Catholic has yet to win a game on the road this season, leaving them with a 3-8 record. Admittedly, the team was facing some tough opposition over that stretch, including 8-3 St. Peter's and 7-3 St. John the Baptist (their opponents had an average overall winning percentage of 59.7% over those games). As for Mt. St. Michael Academy, their victory bumped their record up to 8-2.
Kennedy Catholic will take on Mt. St. Michael Academy at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday. Hopefully Mt. St. Michael Academy is not getting complacent, as they presents a significant challenge as they come into the match much higher ranked than Kennedy Catholic in New York (Mt. St. Michael Academy is ranked 139th, while Kennedy Catholic is ranked 339th). As for Mt. St. Michael Academy, they will face off against Kennedy Catholic at 7:00 p.m. Hopefully Kennedy Catholic focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up four on Saturday.
