Chugiak is 7-1 against Bartlett since May of 2016 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Monday. The Mustangs will square off against the Golden Bears at 5:15 p.m. Chugiak is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.7 runs per game this season.
While Chugiak didn't have the best season last year (they finished 9-11), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. They were the clear victors by a 9-1 margin over Bettye Davis East Anchorage on Saturday. Surprisingly, this marked the fifth straight game in which the away team has come away the victor in this series.
Owen McNeil made a big impact no matter where he played. He tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. McNeil was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.
In other pitching news, Jonah Shearer looked comfortable as he pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than two hits in three consecutive appearances.
Back at the plate, the team relied heavily on Pace Newkirk, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with one triple, one stolen base, and one run. That triple was his first of the season. The team also got some help courtesy of Logan Salle, who went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI.
Chugiak always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .515. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Bettye Davis East Anchorage only posted an OBP of .280.
Meanwhile, Bartlett unfortunately couldn't capitalize on their home-field advantage in their season opener. They lost 8-2 to Homer on Friday.
Chugiak's record now sits at 5-1. As for Bartlett, their defeat dropped their record down to 0-1.
Everything went Chugiak's way against Bartlett in their previous matchup back in May of 2025, as Chugiak made off with a 9-0 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Mustangs since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
