The New Athens Yellow Jackets lost against the Steeleville Warriors on January 4th, and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Thursday. New Athens was just a bucket shy of victory and fell 42-41 to Steeleville. New Athens has not had much luck with Steeleville recently, as the team's come up short the last three times they've met.
New Athens' loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Ella Bohn, who scored seven points along with eight rebounds and six blocks. Bohn hasn't dropped below eight rebounds for four straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Peyton Houser, who scored 15 points.
Even though they lost, New Athens were working as a unit and finished the game with 15 assists. That's the most assists they've managed all season.
Steeleville's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Bailey Cole, who scored eight points along with five rebounds and five steals. Another player making a difference was Lauren Wedemeyer, who scored six points along with eight rebounds and two steals.
New Athens' defeat dropped their record down to 3-15. As for Steeleville, their win bumped their record up to 9-13.
New Athens will head out on the road to face off against Marissa/Coulterville at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. Marissa/Coulterville's defense has only allowed 26.1 points per game this season, so New Athens' offense will have their work cut out for them. As for Steeleville, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Dupo at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. Dupo is no doubt hoping to put an end to a five-game streak of away losses.
