WINDSOR — Burlington’s Clancy Rugg and Tiffany Johnson of BFA-St. Albans were named the Vermont high school basketball players of the year by the Vermont Basketball Coaches Association on Saturday
Rugg and Johnson, both of whom are seniors, were honored during Saturday’s annual Senior All-Star Games at Windsor High.
Rugg averaged 17 points per game for the Seahorses, who reached the Division I championship game for the third straight year. Rice Memorial upset Burlington in overtime. Rugg ended his three-year varsity career with 889 points and his teams posted a 68-3 record during that span.
Johnson averaged 13.9 points and 11.2 rebounds per game for the Comets, who lost to Spaulding in the Division I championship game. Johnson collected more than 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds as a four-year starter. She is headed to Division II Franklin Pierce College in Rindge, N.H., on a basketball scholarship.
Eight coaches also were named Divisional Coaches of the Year: St. Johnsbury’s Jack Driscoll (Division I girls); Burr and Burton’s Jeff Houghton (Division II girls); Rivendell’s Russ Wilcox (Division III girls); Chelsea’s John Parker (Division IV girls); Burlington’s Matt Johnson (Division I boys); Mill River’s Jason Smith (Division II boys); Lake Region’s James Ingalls (Division III boys) and Websterville Baptist’s Jay Ramson (Division IV boys).
Houghton and Wilcox received the Rawlings Award for guiding their teams to undefeated seasons.
The North won all four games during the Senior All-Star Games and now has a 26-10 edge in the all-time series.Here are the game roundups:
DIVISION I/II (Boys)
North 86, South 59: Rice’s Nick Meunier scored 18 points and Burlington’s Clancy Rugg finished with 15 to help the North post a lopsided victory.
The North received nine points from Rice’s Marcus Dutkiewicz, eight from Champlain Valley’s John Donnelly and eight from Montpelier’s Chris Gaboriault.
Mill River’s Austin Bicskei, Bellows Falls’ Peter Francis and Woodstock’s Jake Lapan each had eight points for the South.
DIVISION I/II (Girls)
North 102, South 54: Lamoille’s Rachel Wellman tossed in 18 in a dominating performance by the North.
Mount Mansfield’s Sara Church added 10 points. Annie Penfield-Cyr and South Burlington’s Kelsey Beynnon each added nine for the North.
BFA-St. Albans’ Tiffany Johnson and two Essex players - Kara McNamara and Whitney Elliott - each scored eight for the North.
Spaulding’s Marissa Velez, Montpelier’s Joslin Parker and Mount Anthony’s Becca Sklepowicz each scored eight points for the South.
DIVISION III/IV (Boys)
North 83, South 75: Hazen’s Billy Vasiliadis led all scorers with 20 points in the North’s victory.
Northfield’s Cody Chamberlin and Stowe’s Liam Walsh each added 11 points for the North.
Thetford’s Jason Gray and Black River’s Bobby Rohrig led the South with nine points each.
DIVISION III/IV (Girls)
North 65, South 59: Stow’s Julia Scrubb scored 11 points and Lake Region’s Donna Lawson netted 10 as the North beat the South in the closest game of the day.
Black River’s Courtney Rohrig scored nine to lead the South, which also received eight points from West Rutland’s Emily Sumner.
