Western Albemarle is on a three-game streak of home losses, and Albemarle a five-game streak of away losses dating back to last season. However, someone's due for a change in luck on Tuesday. The Western Albemarle Warriors will host the Albemarle Patriots at 6:30 p.m. Western Albemarle is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 10.9 runs per game this season.
While Western Albemarle didn't have the best season last year (they finished 8-12), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. Everything went their way against Charlottesville on Thursday as they made off with a 19-1 victory. The Warriors' hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.
Katherine Heilman made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Heilman was also big at the plate, getting on base in two of her four plate appearances with four RBI and one run.
In other batting news, Western Albemarle got a massive performance out of Ella Wagner, who got on base in all four of her plate appearances with three runs and three RBI. Those three RBI gave Wagner a new career-high. Peyton Abell was another key player, getting on base in four of her five plate appearances with four runs and one RBI.
Goochland hit Albemarle with a five-run second inning on Friday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Patriots took an 8-5 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Bulldogs.
Myah Washington was cooking despite her team's loss, going 2-for-3 with one triple, one run, and one double. That triple was her first of the season. The team also got some help courtesy of Mariana Coles, who went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases and two RBI.
Western Albemarle's win bumped their record up to 6-3. As for Albemarle, their loss dropped their record down to 2-7.
Albemarle's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Western Albemarle hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .333. It's a different story for Albemarle, though, as they've only averaged .242. Will they be able to contain Western Albemarle's hitters?
Western Albemarle took their victory against Albemarle in their previous matchup back in May of 2024 by a conclusive 8-2 score. Will the Warriors repeat their success, or do the Patriots have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
