5A Region I District 8 recap Oct. 16, 2012
Midway was able to crack the Top 25 in the state rankings this week after beating Copperas Cove. The Panthers came in at 12 in the state poll after placing at number 28 last week.
Ellison moved up to 654 from 685 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in 5A Region I District 8. The Eagles were able to make the jump by falling to Harker Heights 25-22.
Belton's offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Peter Shelburne threw for 282 and one touchdown and Durham Smythe had 116 yards receiving. On the ground Brandon Rhoads chipped in 96 yards.
Belton's offense has been unstoppable this season and the Tigers feature the season leaders in passing, rushing and receiving yards. Shelburne has thrown for 1202 yards and nine touchdowns this season, while Derick Bates has 22 catches for 494 yards. Rhoads leads the league in rushing with 521 yards.
The top two teams in the league will face off this week when first place Midway takes on second place Killeen. Midway topped the Bulldawgs last week, while Killeen defeated Shoemaker.
The Panthers extended the longest winning streak in 5A Region I District 8 this week by beating Copperas Cove, 42-32. This was the team's sixth consecutive win.
