Gordon-Rushville and Morrill are an even 5-5 against one another since February of 2018, but not for long. The Gordon-Rushville Mustangs will venture away from home to face off against the Morrill Lions at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. Having both just faced considerable losses, both teams are looking to turn things around.
Gordon-Rushville is headed into Monday's match looking for a big change in momentum after dropping their third straight game on Friday. They were outmatched by Valentine and fell 80-43. The Mustangs were in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 38-16.
The losing side was boosted by Daniel Martins, who went 10-for-17 on his way to 22 points and eight rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Brody Popken, who posted nine points.
Meanwhile, it was a proper cat-fight when Morrill challenged Niobrara County on Saturday. Morrill came up short against Niobrara County, falling 56-34. While losing is never fun, the Lions can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' basketball rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked 187th in Nebraska, while the Tigers are ranked 20th in Wyoming).
Gordon-Rushville will have to keep a close watch on Ashwin Pittman and Wyler Fisher, a pair of players who had a big impact on Morrill's prior game. Pittman went 6-for-11 to rack up 16 points in addition to six blocks and five boards, while Fisher scored 14 points and five rebounds. Morrill is 9-2 when Pittman posts five or more blocks, but 6-7 otherwise.
Gordon-Rushville's defeat dropped their record down to 6-16. As for Morrill, they are on a five-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 15-9.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Gordon-Rushville has been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 25.7 boards per game. However, it's not like Morrill struggles in that department as they've been averaging 26.2 rebounds. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.
Gordon-Rushville came up short against Morrill in their previous meeting on February 6th, falling 43-32. Can Gordon-Rushville avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
