Pottsboro typically have all the answers at home, but on Friday Mount Vernon proved too difficult a challenge. Mount Vernon walked away with a 45-38 victory over Pottsboro. This was one game where the offenses had no trouble playing at a high level.
Dawson Witherspoon was a one-man wrecking crew for Mount Vernon as he rushed for 307 yards and five touchdowns while picking up 7.9 yards per carry. Witherspoon's longest rush was for an incredible 71 yards. Boogie Mitchell also helped out with an impressive 80 receiving yards.
Gladewater fell on hard times earlier this season, but after back-to-back victories it seems like their luck might finally be changing. They took their contest at home on Friday with ease, bagging a 50-7 win over White Oak. Gladewater pushed the score to 36-7 by the end of the third, a deficit White Oak had little chance of recovering from.
Gladewater relied on the efforts of Nate Smith, who rushed for 114 yards and two touchdowns on only 11 carries, and Carsin Cooper, who rushed for 138 yards and three touchdowns on only 11 carries.
On the other side of the ball, a lot of the credit has to go to Gladewater's defense and their seven sacks. In that department, Jobey Shico was the leader with three sacks.
The win was the third in a row for Mount Vernon, bringing their record for this year to 7-3. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 41.7 points per game. As for Gladewater, they are on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four games, which provided a nice bump to their 3-7 record this season.
Here's a few offensive stats to keep an eye on ahead of Friday's game: Mount Vernon has been excellent on the ground this season, having averaged 184.5 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Gladewater struggles in that department as they've been even better at 191.6 per game. It's looking like Friday's matchup might have some serious battles in the trenches.
