I Section III recap Sept. 26, 2012
Red Mountain extended the longest winning streak in I Section III this week by beating Gilbert, 56-13. The victory was the fifth in a row for the Mountain Lions.
Mountain View was able to crack the Top 25 in the state rankings this week after beating Westwood 52-7. The Toros came in at 18 in the state poll after placing at number 50 last week.
Desert Mountain's dynamic duo of Kyle Allen and Mark Andrews proved tough for Notre Dame Prep to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Allen threw for 382 yards and six touchdowns and Andrews had 198 yards receiving. Alec Waltman helped Desert Mountain's passing attack out by catching six balls for 75 yards.
Josh Hoekstra was the most productive running back in the league this week. He ran for 205 yards on 20 carries as Pinnacle bested the Saints. Teammate Michael Sanders added to the ground attack by rushing for 38 yards.
Red Mountain's Mason Thorman and Drake Pierre have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Thorman has thrown for 1477 yards this season, while Pierre, a 5-foot-10 receiver, has 32 catches for 693 yards. The Pioneers' Hoekstra leads the league in rushing yards with 862.
The marquee game in I Section III this week will be the clash between Brophy College Prep and Mountain Pointe. The Broncos comes into the matchup ranked seventh in the state, while the Pride ranks first.
Two highly touted recruits will be in the spotlight when Brophy College Prep and Mountain Pointe meet this week. Scooter Molander's team features well-regarded senior Tyler Bruggman while Norris Vaughan's team has Kenny Lacy, a sought after senior.
Mountain View moved up to 18 from 50 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. A 52-7 win over the Warriors helped Chad DeGrenier's team improve its standing.
