Atkins is 2-8 against Rockingham County since April of 2022 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Wednesday. The Camels will venture away from home to square off against the Cougars at 6:00 p.m. Each of these teams will be battling to keep a four-game winning streak alive.
On Tuesday, Atkins was able to grind out a solid win over Northeast Guilford, taking the game 8-5.
Atkins' victory was truly a team effort as three different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Nik Nelson, who went 1-for-4 with two stolen bases and two runs.
Meanwhile, Rockingham County never let their opponents score on Tuesday. They were the clear victors by a 19-0 margin over Ben L. Smith. The Cougars might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won 17 matches by six runs or more this season.
Carter Matthews made a big impact no matter where he played. On the mound, he pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Matthews was also big at the plate, getting on base in both of his plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Nate Revis, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double. Another player making a difference was Hudson Deel, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with one triple, one stolen base, and one run.
Rockingham County always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .759. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Rockingham County pushed their record up to 21-2 with the win, which was their 11th straight at home. Those home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.5 runs on average over those games. As for Atkins, their record now sits at 9-15.
Atkins suffered a grim 9-0 defeat to Rockingham County in their previous meeting back in March. Can the Camels avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
