San Ysidro is preparing for their first league matchup of the season on Tuesday. They will square off against the Southwest SD Raiders at 3:30 p.m. San Ysidro is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 16 runs per game this season.
San Ysidro will roll into the game after a wild two-game stretch: they only put up two runs on Friday, then bounced right back against Chula Vista Learning Community Charter on Monday. The Cougars blew past the Cobras 26-7. The Cougars have beaten the Cobras the last four times they've met, but they better watch out: this was the closest the Cobras has come to flipping the script.
Sophia Maldonado was a standout: she went 3-for-5 with five RBI, three runs, and one triple. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in February. Another player making a difference was Lizette Herrera, who scored three runs and stole four bases while getting on base in all five of her plate appearances.
Maldonado wasn't the only one making solid contact: San Ysidro kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 16 hits. The Cougars are a perfect 7-0 when they post 11 or more hits.
Meanwhile, Southwest SD had already won five in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 12.8 runs) and they went ahead and made it six on Friday. They came within a single run of losing the streak, but they secured an 8-7 W against the Colts. While the Raiders didn't have the best season last year (they finished 3-16), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past.
Samantha Ramirez was incredible, scoring two runs and stealing two bases while going 3-for-3. The team also got some help courtesy of Sophia Borquez, who went 2-for-3 with one stolen base and one RBI.
Southwest SD's win was their fifth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 7-3. The home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.8 runs on average over those games. As for San Ysidro, their record now sits at 8-4.
Tuesday's matchup will be a test for both teams' pitchers. San Ysidro hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .446. However, it's not like Southwest SD struggles in that department as they've averaged .398. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
San Ysidro took their win against Southwest SD when the teams last played back in March by a conclusive 23-9 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Cougars since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
