It may have taken overtime to finish the job, but the Sumner Stingrays ultimately got the result they hoped for on Thursday. They skirted past Tampa Bay Tech 60-57. Having run the score up that high, both teams might be doing some extra defensive drills very soon.
Sumner's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Jabory Nelson led the charge by dropping a double-double on 15 points and 13 rebounds. It was the first time this season that Nelson pulled down eight or more rebounds. Jacob Douglas was another key contributor, scoring 20 points along with six rebounds and four steals.
Tampa Bay Tech's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Emannel Pierre, who scored 16 points along with three steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Maxwell Daley, who scored ten points along with eight rebounds.
Sumner's victory bumped their record up to 16-9. As for Tampa Bay Tech, their loss dropped their record down to 13-12.
Sumner does not have any more games scheduled as of now. Tampa Bay Tech will be staying on the road on Tuesday to face off against the Longhorns at 8:00 a.m. on February 6th.
