Two teams were on the hunt for playoff glory, but unfortunately for The Kellenberg Memorial Firebirds, they weren't the ones who walked away with it. They were beaten by Iona Prep 49-19 on Friday. Kellenberg Memorial has struggled against Iona Prep recently, as their contest on Friday was their sixth consecutive lost matchup.
Although Kellenberg Memorial took the loss, they still got scores from Christian Dacosta, Luca Carusone, and Jack Geoghan.
The team lost despite holding Iona Prep to a paltry 244 yards. A big part of that defensive dominance came down to Kellenberg Memorial's ability to keep the quarterback under pressure: the team laid him out four times before it was all said and done. Leading the way was Ryan Galla and his two sacks.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Iona Prep to victory, but perhaps none more so than Steven Dowdy jr, who picked up 111 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Dowdy jr was no stranger to the big play, lighting up the secondary with a catch that went for 69 yards. Another player making a difference was Joey Gaston, who threw for 149 yards and two touchdowns while completing 85.7% of his passes.
Kellenberg Memorial's loss was their third straight on the road , which bumped their record down to 3-7. The slump could be explained by some tough opposition over that stretch, namely Iona Prep, Monsignor Farrell, and Archbishop Stepinac. As for Iona Prep, the win was the fourth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 7-3.
Kellenberg Memorial does not have any more games scheduled as of now. Iona Prep will look to defend their home field on Friday against Monsignor Farrell at 6:00 p.m. Monsignor Farrell is also coming in off of a big victory, so somebody is in for a big reversal of fortune.
