University has gone a perfect 10-0 against Preston recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Wednesday. The Hawks will head out on the road to square off against the Knights at 5:00 p.m. University is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.7 runs per game this season.
The home team had won the previous four meetings between University and Buckhannon-Upshur, and University kept the tradition alive. The Hawks put the hurt on the Buccaneers with a sharp 13-5 victory on Tuesday. The high-flying hitting performance was a huge turnaround for the Hawks considering their two-run performance the match before.
Maddie Campbell was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run while striking out seven over four innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in four consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with three runs, one stolen base, and two RBI.
In other batting news, University got a massive performance out of Kelsey Park, who went 3-for-4 with three runs, one triple, and one stolen base. That's the most runs Park has posted over her last 12 games. Lexi Elza was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and one stolen base.
University always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .526. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Buckhannon-Upshur only posted an OBP of .379.
Grafton hit Preston with a 12-run third inning on Tuesday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Knights lost 18-3 to the Bearcats. The Knights just can't catch a break and have now endured three losses in a row.
Preston saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Allyson Teets, who went 1-for-2 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
Preston's defeat dropped their record down to 3-9. As for University, their record now sits at 14-3-1.
Preston's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: University has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 9.6 hits per game. It's a different story for Preston, though, as they've been averaging 10.1 hits. Given University's sizable advantage in that area, the Knights will need to find a way to close that gap.
University took their win against Preston when the teams last played on April 2nd by a conclusive 15-0 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Hawks since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
