Baseball Game Preview: Kress Kangaroos vs. Claude Mustangs

For the second straight game, Kress will face off against Claude. The Kangaroos will host the Mustangs at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. One thing working in Kress' favor is that they have posted at least ten runs in their last four matchups.

Kress hadn't beaten Claude on the road since March 28, 2022 but that history sure didn't bother them on Tuesday. The Kangaroos were the clear victors by a 17-1 margin over the Mustangs. The Kangaroos might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won five contests by seven runs or more this season.

Drew Morphis made a splash while hitting and pitching. He struck out six batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit (and only one walk). He also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Kress is 4-1 when he allows at most one earned run, but 2-8 otherwise. Morphis was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-5. What's more, he posted two doubles, the most he's had since back in February of 2024.

In other pitching news, Kingston Brumley looked comfortable as he pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. He is becoming a predictor of Kress' success: when he allows at most one hit the team is 2-1 (and 4-8 when he doesn't).

Back at the plate, the team relied heavily on Xane Garcia, who got on base in all five of his plate appearances with one home run and one triple. That triple was his first of the season. The team also got some help courtesy of Malachi Guzman, who scored three runs while getting on base in four of his five plate appearances.

Kress lost a few balls and finished the game with two home runs. That's the most home runs they've managed all season.

Kress' victory was their fourth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 6-9. The road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 14.0 runs over those games. As for Claude, their loss was their first in the district, dropping their district record down to 2-1 and their overall record down to 4-9-1.
