Basketball Recap: Centennial Takes a Loss

Centennial was the 101-72 winner over Frontier when they last played one another back in February of 2024, but their luck changed this time around. The Centennial Golden Hawks took a 54-47 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Frontier Titans on Thursday.

Despite the loss, Centennial still got an impressive performance from Michael Gutierrez, who went 5 of 11 en route to 16 points. What's more, Gutierrez also racked up two blocks, the most he's had since back in December of 2024. Acen Zuniga was another key player, putting up five points in addition to ten boards and three steals.

Even though they lost, Centennial smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 17 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 11 offensive rebounds in 12 consecutive matches.

Frontier got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Zach Garnett out in front who almost dropped a double-double on 14 points and nine rebounds. Garnett has been hot recently, having posted nine or more boards the last three times he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Kai Wilkins, who posted eight points and five rebounds.

Centennial has traveled a rocky road recently having lost four of their last five contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 13-9 record this season. As for Frontier, the win (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 12-12.

Centennial will head out on the road to challenge Bakersfield Christian at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday. Centennial is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 67.5 points per game this season. As for Frontier, they will welcome Stockdale at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Frontier also hasn't been messing around on offense: they've averaged 61.3 points per game.
