The Hondo Owls will face off against the Crystal City Javelinas at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Each of these teams will be fighting to keep a win streak alive as Hondo comes in on four and Crystal City on three.
Hondo had to skate by with only a one-set margin when they last took the court, which might have inspired the three-set drubbing they dealt Poteet on Friday. The Owls blew past the Aggies 3-0.
Hondo never let Poteet on the board, but things got pretty close in the second set. The final score came out to 25-6, 25-22, 25-8.
Hondo can attribute much of their success to Ava Lowe, who had three digs and three aces, and Elena Rivera, who had three digs and two aces. That's the most aces Lowe has posted over her last seven matchups.
They weren't the only good servers: Hondo was lethal from the service line and finished the match with 19 aces. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now served at least five aces in eight consecutive contests.
Meanwhile, Crystal City made easy work of Dilley on Friday and carried off a 3-0 win.
The 3-0 score doesn't show just how dominant Crystal City was: they took every set by at least 15 points. Once all was said and done, the final score wound up at 25-10, 25-8, 25-9.
Hondo better focus on containing Alyssa Flores and Anayeli Luna as the pair were huge in Crystal City's win. Flores had ten digs and two aces, while Luna had six digs and four aces.
Hondo's victory bumped their record up to 18-11. As for Crystal City, their win bumped their record up to 19-6.
Here's a few offensive stats to keep an eye on ahead of Tuesday's match: Hondo has really dialed in their serving this season, having averaged 7.3 aces per game. However, it's not like Crystal City struggles in that department as they've been averaging 9 aces. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
Hondo couldn't quite get it done against Crystal City in their previous matchup back in August as they fell 2-0. Will the Owls have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check MaxPreps after the action for a full breakdown of the game and more volleyball content.
