Salpointe Catholic is a perfect 10-0 against Nogales since March of 2017 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Friday. The Lancers will be playing at home against the Apaches at 4:00 p.m. The last four games Salpointe Catholic has played have been within two runs, so don't be surprised if it's a close one.
Salpointe Catholic took a loss when they played away from home last Tuesday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed last Thursday. They never let Mica Mountain get on the board and left with a 2-0 win.
Salpointe Catholic got a great performance from Audri Elias as she didn't allow a single earned run over five innings pitched. Elias has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up a single earned run in four consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Leylani Cuesta was excellent, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two doubles, one run, and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Nogales was not able to break out of their rough patch on Thursday as the team picked up their 11th straight defeat. They lost 11-1 to Pueblo. That's two games in a row now that the Apaches have lost by exactly ten runs.
Ximena Barnett was cooking despite her team's loss, going a perfect 2-for-2 with one stolen base, one run, and one double.
Salpointe Catholic is on a roll lately: they've won 13 of their last 17 matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 18-6-1 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.8 runs on average over those games. As for Nogales, their loss dropped their record down to 7-21.
Nogales' hitters will have their work cut out for them on Friday. Salpointe Catholic has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 8.9 strikeouts per game. It's a different story for Nogales, though, as they've been averaging an even more impressive 3.3 strikeouts. Will Salpointe Catholic keep running through batters, or will the Apaches buck the trend?
Salpointe Catholic took their win against Nogales when the teams last played back in April of 2024 by a conclusive 25-0 score. Will the Lancers repeat their success, or do the Apaches have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
