If a team won 64-0 in a football game, some reading the score would shake their head and think that a coach may have showed poor sportsmanship by running up the score.
But in fastpitch softball, a 64-0 score is a sure sign that things got completely out of hand.
Woodinville, which finished third last year at the Class 3A state tournament, beat Franklin 64-0 in a KingCo Conference game stopped after five innings because of the state's mercy rule.
Woodinville racked up 60 hits and its leadoff hitter went 8-for-10 with eight runs and eight RBI.
"No one has been more disturbed about the final score of our Franklin game than I," Woodinville coach Jim Weir said in a statement on the team's web site. "Those of you that were there know that everything was done, short of making a mockery of the game, to end it."
Weir said several measures were taken to curb the bloodletting.
"Runners were going 60 feet at a time, umpires were told to make the strike zone as big as they wanted," Weir said in the statement. "They were told our runners would be aggressive in their leads and to call it like they saw it, yet the game was permitted to get where it did. I, along with the Franklin coach, was unaware how bad it actually was until it was finally over."
After Woodinville went up 7-0, the team stopped its aggression on the base paths, Weir said.
"This included stealing bases, tagging up, bunting, hit and running, advancing on pass balls and wild pitches, stretching singles into doubles and doubles into triples," Weir said. "All substitutions were made in the first inning. All cheering and celebrating was stopped early in the first. We did everything short of disrespecting the game to "shut down"."
Baseball: Bainbridge Has 24-run Inning
The Bainbridge Spartans were involved in a blowout themselves in a 34-0 win over Cleveland in a Metro League game.
Bainbridge had a 24-run inning in the fourth, highlighted by a grand slam by Colin Feldtman.
"It was brutal out there," Bainbridge coach Jayson Gore said. "We batted left-handed with wood bats, and we were still getting hits."
Basketball: Gray Racking Up Accolades
Steven Gray continues to pile up the accolades. The Bainbridge senior has left his mark on the record book as few West Sound athletes have.
Gray was named Metro League and Class 3A state tournament MVP. The Kitsap Sun named him to its Super Six all-star team for the fourth-straight year. Also in the past week, the Tacoma News Tribune and the Seattle Times have both named him state player of the year (the Seattle PI went with Franklin's Venoy Overton).
Next week, the Associated Press All-State team is due out (this team is voted on by sports media across the state), and Gray is a shoo-in for his fourth-straight All-State nod. He should also be the favorite to earn the state player of the year.
Football: East/West All-Star Rosters Announced
The rosters for the annual Washington State Football Coaches Association's annual All-Star game at Everett Memorial Stadium on June 30 were released.
The East coach will be Bob Lucey, Curtis' successful football coach who retired at the end of the season.
