IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) figured to have a strong pitching staff this year, but this is ridiculous.
Through eight games this season, the Ascenders, who are No. 1 for the second week in a row in the MaxPreps Top 25 National Baseball Rankings, have yet to allow an earned run. In 48 innings pitched, the staff has allowed one run while posting seven shutouts. They've also posted 59 strikeouts to just 11 walks and have allowed 23 hits. Opponents are hitting .139.
Kendall Williams, a potential first-round draft pick in June, was the latest Ascender to take the spotlight as he threw a five-inning, no-hitter against Clearwater in a 12-0 win. He's allowed one hit in eight innings.
The pitching staff will get a true test over the coming weeks. IMG Academy hosts the IMG National Classic March 26-29 in a tournament featuring 16 teams from 10 different states, including Venice (Fla.), Flanagan (Fla.), Regis Jesuit (Colo.), Baylor (Tenn.), Pelham (Ala.) and Rock Bridge (Mo.).
The following week, IMG Academy plays in the National High School Invitational in Cary (N.C.). The tournament features six teams currently in the MaxPreps Top 25 National Rankings, including Blessed Trinity (Roswell, Ga.), Corona del Sol (Tempe, Ariz.), Harvard-Westlake (Studio City, Calif.), Huntington Beach (Calif.), Orange Lutheran (Orange, Calif.) and IMG Academy. Orange Lutheran is the two-time defending tournament champion.
