The Buckeye State isn’t wasting time separating the contenders from the pretenders. Three of Ohio’s top teams – all ranked in the top 50 nationally by MaxPreps – will get serious tests over the weekend to begin their seasons.
The highlight will be No. 35 St. Xavier facing Cincinnati rival Colerain as part of the Skyline Chili Crosstown Showdown. The game’s Cleveland equivalent will also be intriguing as St. Ignatius faces the team that ended its season a year ago, Glenville.
No. 5 Coldwater, another Ohio squad, is the highest ranked team in action this weekend. The Cavaliers face Kenton, which gave them a scare in the season-opener in 2007.
Indiana also has a showdown in store Friday night as national No. 11 Carmel – the state’s defending 5A champion – opens against perennial power Indianapolis Cathedral.
Brophy College Prep of Phoenix and Bishop Gorman and Las Vegas will square off in the Barry Sollenberger Classic at University of Phoenix Stadium, the home of the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals. It is probably better known as the site of Boise State’s epic upset of Oklahoma in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl.
