Maddox Marshall was the offensive standout of the contest as he rushed for 100 yards on only 11 carries, and also picked up 40 receiving yards and one TD. He has become a key player for Southwood: the team is undefeated when he posts at least 80 rushing yards, but 0-5 otherwise.
Wins are hard to come by when you can't run the rock, something Southwood proved: they limited Whitko to a paltry 3.1 yards per carry. The team can thank Ivan Ranck for the heroic effort on defense: he. Southwood's run defense has been on the up-and-up: they allowed 2.3 yards per carry earlier this season, but they've only allowed 5.27 on average over their last five games.
Southwood didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Marshall and Isaiah Widemon. Marshall got in on the action too, converting a pick into a touchdown.
Meanwhile, after only 13 points in their last matchup, Lewis Cass made sure to put some points up on the board against Wabash on Friday. The Kings claimed a resounding 42-7 win over the Apaches. The score at the end of the third wound up being the final score as the Kings just coasted through the last quarter.
This one was won in the trenches and the lion's share of the credit has to go to Gavin Smith and Tyler Grist. Smith rushed for 159 yards and four touchdowns on only 14 carries while Grist rushed for 104 yards and a pair of scores on only six carries. The dominant performance also gave Grist a new career-high in rushing touchdowns (two).
The victory made it two in a row for Southwood and bumps their season record up to 3-5. The wins came thanks in part to their defensive effort, having only surrendered a grand total of 20 points in those games. As for Lewis Cass, their record is now 5-3.
Southwood ended up a good deal behind Lewis Cass in their previous meeting back in October of 2024, losing 41-22. Can the Knights avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
