Hernando is a perfect 5-0 against Oxford since April of 2021 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Thursday. The Tigers will be playing in front of their home fans against the Chargers at 6:00 p.m. Hernando will be looking to extend their current five-game winning streak.
Hernando is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Mississippi's top teams: DeSoto Central, who was ranked fifth at the time (Hernando was ranked second). The Tigers never let the Jaguars get on the board and left with a 3-0 win on Tuesday. The Tigers' pitching crew has been rock solid lately; the team hasn't given up a run in their last four matchups.
Not much got past Olivia Skinner, who gave up just four hits to keep DeSoto Central off the board. Skinner has been consistent : she hasn't given up more than two walks in eight consecutive appearances.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Hayden Hodge, who went 2-for-3 with one stolen base and two RBI.
Oxford never got on the board in their matchup on Tuesday, but that sure wasn't the case in their game against Southaven on Wednesday. They came out on top against Southaven by a score of 13-8. The victory continues a trend for Oxford in their matchups with Southaven: they've now won four in a row.
Mary-Claire King was a major factor no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, pitching four innings while giving up just two earned runs off six hits. What's more, she posted four strikeouts, the most she's had since back in March. She was also big at the plate, scoring three runs while going 2-for-5.
In other batting news, Jacei Clark and Jayla Dukes did most of the damage at the plate: Clark went 4-for-5 with one home run, three stolen bases, and four RBI, while Dukes went 2-for-4 with one home run, six RBI, and two runs. Those three stolen bases gave Clark a new career-high.
Hernando's win was their 17th straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 26-1. The road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.0 runs over those games. As for Oxford, their win bumped their record up to 13-14.
Hernando's speedy runners might be the difference in Thursday's game. The Tigers have been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 6.5 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for Oxford, though, as they've been averaging only 0.9 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Hernando continue to outrun the ball?
Everything went Hernando's way against Oxford in their previous matchup on April 1st, as Hernando made off with an 11-3 victory. Will the Tigers repeat their success, or do the Chargers have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
