The Soquel Knights will challenge the San Lorenzo Valley Cougars at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. Soquel is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.9 runs per game this season.
Soquel proved they can win big two weeks ago (they won by 15) and on Tuesday they proved they can win the close ones too. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the team sidled past Scotts Valley 6-4. The win was familiar territory for the Knights, who have now won three contests in a row.
Kiyomi Dunlap spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered four runs (all of which were unearned) on six hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up a single earned run in three consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Hailey Leimas was incredible, going a perfect 2-for-2 with one home run and three RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Eliza Stevens, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one double.
Meanwhile, there's no place like home for San Lorenzo Valley, who bounced back after a loss on the road two weeks ago. They put the hurt on Harbor with a sharp 15-4 victory on Tuesday. The Cougars might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won five games by six runs or more this season.
Elie Colby was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She pitched four innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off four hits. Colby was even better at the plate, getting on base in four of her five plate appearances with four runs. With that strong performance, she is now averaging an impressive 2.3 runs per game.
In other batting news, Grace Purtscher was a standout: she went 4-for-5 with four RBI and one run. Audrey Jouglet was another key player, getting on base in four of her five plate appearances with one stolen base and two RBI.
San Lorenzo Valley always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .575. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Harbor only posted an OBP of .333.
Soquel's win bumped their record up to 11-5. As for San Lorenzo Valley, their victory bumped their record up to 7-5-1.
Soquel got the 'W' in their previous meeting back in March against San Lorenzo Valley by a conclusive 15-2 score. Will the Knights repeat their success, or do the Cougars have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
