Class of 2010 Top 100 guard Kyle Collinsworth of Provo (Utah) High School made a verbal commitment to Brigham Young University Thursday, according to Utah Pump-N-Run club coach Michael O’Connor.
“I spoke with his folks earlier and he has committed,” O’Connor said.
Collinsworth, a versatile 6-foot-6 perimeter player rated No. 57 overall among 2010 prospects by MaxPreps, earned Utah 4A most valuable player honors as a junior after posting 18.4 points, 6.7 assists and 5.6 rebounds per game. The Bulldogs went 24-1 and reached the state title game.
At BYU, Collinsworth will join brother Chris, a 6-9 post player who played for the Cougars as a freshman in 2007-08 prior to embarking on a two-year religious mission.
According to O’Connor, a mission is also in the future for Kyle.
“That’s in his plans, but he is going to play a year before so he and Chris will get a chance to play together,” O’Connor said. “I’ve been lucky enough to coach him at the AAU level and fortunate enough to coach his brother as well. They are both great kids.”
Collinsworth selected BYU over co-finalist Virginia. Tony Bennett recruited the Utah guard while at Washington State and continued the pursuit as head coach of the Cavaliers.
Memphis stocking backcourt
Memphis head coach Josh Pastner landed his fourth backcourt commitment in the class of 2010 Thursday as hometown star Chris Crawford of Sheffield High School announced his pledge at a press conference.
Crawford, a 6-4 guard, averaged 26 points per game as a junior for the Knights. Despite the big numbers, he remained one of the nation’s best-kept secrets until playing a big role in the Memphis Magic club team’s tournament championship at the adidas Super 64 in Las Vegas over the summer.
Crawford joins a talented pack of guards headed to Memphis next fall. Pastner and the Tigers landed Baltimore brothers Antonio and Will Barton in June. Another local product in Joe Jackson of White Station High School committed in September. Will Barton (No. 3) and Jackson (No. 11) are two of the top seniors in America.
The newest Tiger also considered Mississippi State and Tennessee.
