The Capitan Tigers are taking a road trip to challenge the Mesilla Valley Christian School SonBlazers at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. The squads are rolling into the game with opposing streaks: Capitan has struggled recently with 18 losses in a row, while Mesilla Valley Christian School will arrive with ten straight victories.
Capitan lost 14-2 to Mescalero Apache on Tuesday.
Capitan saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Greg Castro, who went 1-for-2 with one RBI. Xavier Wilson also deserves some recognition as he snagged his first stolen base of the season.
Meanwhile, Mesilla Valley Christian School got themselves on the board against Lordsburg on Tuesday, but Lordsburg never followed suit. They put the hurt on the Mavericks with a sharp 13-0 win. The SonBlazers might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won 11 games by nine runs or more this season.
Jeremiah Sullivan and Zach Beasley made a splash while hitting and pitching. Throwing, Sullivan kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits over four innings pitched. Meanwhile, Beasley tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in eight consecutive appearances. At the plate, Sullivan went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, one run, and one double, while Beasley went 2-for-3 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Davis Coyle, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run, two stolen bases, and three runs. What's more, he posted four RBI, the most he's had since back in May of 2024. Matt Borde was another key player, going 3-for-4 with four RBI.
Mesilla Valley Christian School was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .500. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .300 or higher in 11 consecutive contests.
Mesilla Valley Christian School pushed their record up to 13-3 with the victory, which was their eighth straight on the road. Those road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 16.1 runs over those games. As for Capitan, their defeat dropped their record down to 0-15.
Friday's matchup might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Capitan has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .438. However, it's not like Mesilla Valley Christian School struggles in that department as they've averaged .555. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Capitan suffered a grim 25-0 defeat to Mesilla Valley Christian School in their previous matchup two weeks ago. Can the Tigers avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
