Owasso (Okla.) outlasted
Midwest City (Okla.), 48-45, in a marathon four-overtime game during the
Oklahoma Class 6A bracket quarterfinals. The Bombers had been unbeaten and ranked No. 1 in the state.
Both teams scored a single touchdown in the first three overtimes, but the final extra period provided the most fireworks.
J.W. Morrison put the favored Bombers ahead with a 26-yard field goal to open the fourth overtime. For Owasso,
Scottie Prealow ran for 2 yards, then drove to the 1-yard line where the ball was stripped from him and tumbled into the end zone. Following a wild scramble, tight end
Matt Gallagher fell on the ball for a stunning winning touchdown.
Owasso coach Bill Patterson told the Tulsa World, "This win is a testimony to our players and their willingness to continue playing. We got a lucky break at the end. But you have to have some luck along the way."
The Rams, now 9-3 and headed for a semifinal match against
Broken Arrow (Okla.), were led by quarterback
Kason Key, who completed 21 of 31 passes for 212 yards and four touchdowns. Sophomore wide receiver
John Cole Neph made eight catches for 102 yards and two touchdowns, while senior wide receiver
Keon Hatcher had seven catches for 100 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
James Flanders, a 5-foot-10, 181-pound senior, was a workhorse for Midwest City. The Tulsa University recruit carried 55 times for 273 yards and all six of his team's touchdowns.
