The Waccamaw Warriors lost against the Andrews Yellowjackets back in December of 2023, and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Friday. Waccamaw opened the new year with a less-than-successful 59-51 defeat to Andrews. The defeat unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for Waccamaw in their matchups with Andrews: they've now lost four in a row.
Despite the loss, Waccamaw still got an impressive performance from Tyrese Haynes, who scored 21 points along with seven rebounds. Haynes continues to roll, besting his previous point total in each of the last five games he's played. Colin Behney was another key contributor, scoring eight points.
Even though they lost, Waccamaw were working as a unit and finished the game with 14 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Andrews only posted seven assists.
Leading Andrews to victory were Sharod Sumpter and Vincent Rhue. Sumpter scored 16 points along with six rebounds, while Rhue scored 18 points along with five rebounds and four steals. That makes it three consecutive games in which Sumpter has scored at least 25% of Andrews' points. The team also got some help courtesy of SerQuan Middleton, who scored ten points.
Waccamaw has not been sharp recently, as they've lost seven of their last eight matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 4-10 record this season. As for Andrews, they now have a winning record of 7-6.
Waccamaw will look to defend their home court on Tuesday against Georgetown at 7:30 p.m. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in South Carolina (Georgetown is ranked 165th, while Waccamaw is ranked 185th). As for Andrews, they will head out on the road to face off against Marion at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Marion is coming into the contest on a three-game losing streak.
